A Webinar on AI for Risk and Crisis Manager plus two books

A quick note from the road today

I'm on the road, so it's a quick note today with three things you might find helpful.

AI For Risk, Safety, Security and Crisis Managers

First - My friend Christian Harris runs a regular safety and security live roundtable, and I'll be with him tomorrow (Wednesday) to discuss AI and how risk, security, crisis, and safety managers can use it for their work.

You can sign up for the session here (note that it is a 12:30 UK start time)

Book Club

Next, two other friends have new books, both with a career slant to them.

Greg Hutchins has been writing about how we now live in a 'VUCA' world (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity) for years and just published his book 'Working It,' which helps you develop your roadmap to do good, fulfilling work. He was good enough to send me an early copy, and I've included my review below.

My Amazon Review for Working it

The Manual for Your Future, Happy Self

Many books explain the challenges we face, but this is one of the few that tells you how to navigate this 'VUCA' world (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity). "Working It" delivers on the promise of the title, giving you the guidance and exercises you need to get unstuck and build your roadmap for the future you.

"Working It" is all about results and action, not generalities, and the technical, risk-based approach provides a clear structure for readers to determine where they are, what's holding them back, and what's making them unhappy. Using a risk-based framework in the context of life and career planning seems unusual at first, but the structure and rigidity of this approach cut through ambiguity and add much greater clarity than the looser, 'hand wavy' approach we're used to seeing in these kinds of books.

Importantly, despite the technical approach, the book always reminds us of the need for us to be fulfilled by our work: to do work of value that makes us happy. So this isn't a manual for how to get a better job. Instead, it's a manual for building a future, happier you: a 'you' that's doing good, meaningful, fulfilling work. And instead of being disrupted by a VUCA world, you're someone who can turn these challenges to your advantage.

Greg's been writing about the VUCA world for years, but COVID and the current AI acceleration have brought these conversations into the mainstream, leaving a lot of people unsure about what work will mean for them in the future. For a lot of us, this is going to be exactly the right book at exactly the right time.

Meanwhile, Bill Coletti just published his new book, Career to Calling, explaining how to find greater fulfillment in your work and life. It also takes a workbook approach to help design the next season of your life.

Finally, no meme but instead a gratuitous picture of one of my favorite places in the world in the UK's Peak District from early this morning.
