SITREP for March 8 2024

Plus three things for your radar

Good morning and happy Friday.

Welcome to the SITREP for March 8, 2024

I hope you enjoyed yesterday’s note on how LLMs can help with forecasting and decision-making in general. You’ll find it here if you missed yesterday’s email.

I’m back with the stability updates today but first, there are three things to put on your radar.

🇲🇩 Moldova

Vladimir Putin met with the leader of the Gaugazia region of Moldova, an autonomous region that prefers strong ties to Russia, than the Modova’s pro-EU stance. By itself, this meeting doesn’t mean much but it does provide a reminder of the number of small chunks of Europe that Russia could claim to take an interest in.

🚢 The Red Sea

Three crew members were sadly killed on a vessel transiting the Red Sea in the latest Houthi attack on shipping. The attack highlights the ongoing danger, particularly as these were the first fatalities from an attack. Moreover, the incident also signifies the possibility of confusion over vessel ownership.

The Houthis claimed the vessel was American, and it was reportedly owned recently by a US firm, but is now described as “owned by the Liberian-registered company True Confidence Shipping and operated by the Greece-based Third January Maritime” (from a statement by the owners via Reuters). Vess

🇵🇸 Gaza / 🇮🇱 Israel

Sunday is March 10, the Israeli deadline for the return of all remaining hostages. Talks in Cairo have ended with no agreement so what happens on Sunday is unclear.

Ramadan begins on Monday, which will also raise tension as Muslims from the West Bank and Israel congregate at The Dome of the Rock / Temple Mount for prayer. The Israeli government has said that there will be no restrictions on worship at the site, but tensions remain extremely high.

On to the summaries.

As a reminder, SITREPs covers the comparative stability of the select countries, comparing current events over the last ~72 hours to the country's baseline stability assessment (i.e. what's 'normal'). That way, you can put events into context and determine if you need to take action — or seize an opportunity — in the short term.

Have a great weekend and I’ll see you on Monday with more details on The Big Breakup 💔 I announced last week.
